Questions remain after fatal car accident

This time of year can mean unpredictable weather, which means that motorists have to pay careful attention when out on the road. If drivers fail to take precautions during winter weather, the results could be catastrophic, as is the case in a recent car accident involving three vehicles and a fatality. Nebraska law enforcement is still trying to determine exactly what happened, though they suspect inclement weather may have been a factor. Even so, one of the drivers involved could face criminal charges.

Police say that the crash happened on a recent evening on a state highway. An SUV traveling southbound apparently crashed into a pickup truck heading north. After the initial impact, a sedan rear-ended the SUV. The SUV burst into flames, though it is unclear which impact caused the fire. The driver of the SUV died at the scene but the other two drivers only had minor injuries.

Police aren't sure exactly which driver was at fault for the crash and they intend to continue investigating the incident. They are fairly confident that either the SUV or the pickup truck crossed the center lane, causing the collision. If the pickup truck driver is determined to be at fault, he could face criminal charges in connection with the accident.

Even if no criminal charges are filed, the pickup truck driver could still be facing civil litigation if the evidence suggests he was negligent regarding the car accident. A skilled attorney could pursue a wrongful death claim with the purpose of securing monetary damages for the victim's loved ones. Those here in Nebraska who have lost loved ones to a car crash that was caused by someone else's negligence may want to consider taking similar action.
